Pro Contracts ?
Hi Everyone
So I havent written a blog in quite some time now. Partly because of the fact that I think Blogs are boring. And only when I have something interesting to share with you guys I consider writing something. Of course I like writing these blogs to promote this sport we call cycling that I have grown so fond off and keep the few fans I have updated.
The last blog I wrote focussed mostly on my experience on the Mountainbike at the Clarens National MTB series. I guess the question is what the hell was I doing on a Mtb. Well its pretty obvious. South Africa in general doesn't have many road races on the calendar anymore. And the few we do mostly end up not being much longer than two hours of racing. Its no surprise we see so many road cyclists converting to the Mountain Biking scene. Not because we lost interest in road cycling but simply because we are looking for more.
Not long after the Clarens Mtb series, I ended up doing Joburg2C With Teammate Brendon Davids. To be honest it truly was an awesome experience. Very well organized and such a great vibe you don't easily find on the road scene anymore- apposed to previous years. We eventually ended up third overall which was really quite pleasing considering all the bad luck we had. It was also my first ever Mountain Bike stage race longer than three days. And in the last three years I've only done a hand full of small local Mountain Bike races.
The nine days of racing at Joberg2C ended off with stage 10 being Tour Durban. I presumed I would be pretty useless, as I was fighting a stomach bug the last 4 Days off Joberg2C. But none the less I ended up having good legs on the day and we (RoadCover) claimed 1st, 2nd & 3rd on the day. We couldn't have asked for more.
But something in my head kept on bothering me- more and more each day ever since the South African Championships and African Continental Championships.
I thought by getting a result here- surely something should come from it. Biggest mistake off my life! Yes I podiumed on the Individual Time Trial and Road Race and even ended up winning the African Continental Championships shortly after that. But it seemed that it simply wasn't good enough.
I took a short break after all off it to reset and rethink what alternative options there are. Nothing was coming up so what option did I have to get to Europe?
It all started with a simple text to one off my old Team directors at Bonitas in 2013. "Hey Barry." Not long after that he managed to find something for me in Spain. It wasn't going to be big but it was better than nothing. And to be honest its not really about how big the Team is but more about who they know...Contacts, Contacts, Contacts...
So long story short. Doing Mountain Bike Races just isn't my thing. Road Cycling has and always will be my passion- ever since I did my first big rides in the Mountains off Lydenburg, while living with my Grandparents.
In the end of May RoadCover has allowed me some freedom to chase some personal ambitions here in Spain. Currently Im riding for a team called Rias Baixas. They have been incredibly in assisting me to fit in and make the most of my limited time here.
The racing season here has really started well so far and things are really looking good for the future. But I can't elaborate too much yet ;) Maybe the Blog Title may give some hint. So far Ive managed to win one race, finish 2nd and 4th.
Tomorrow I fight again to achieve this so called dreams.
Once again thanks to everyone whom helped getting me here. You know who you are and its hugely appreciated!
