Bestmed Satellite Classic (Old Willie)
This past weekend featured yet another iconic event hosted by Bestmed. The Satellite classic has always had quite a reputation for some interesting racing over the last few years. It might not be the Argus, Amashova or 94.7 but it sure is a race everyone knows off.
This years edition was quite interesting. We saw one of the biggest elite bunches to date this year. JP Van Zyl going out of his way to bring riders all over Africa to the iconic event. Most riders whom did not fancy their chances of getting over Hekpoort tried to make the early break. Many small breaks went but with no success. To be honest the racing was quite fast so many of the main hitters did'nt even try go in the breaks.
As we approached Hekpoort I was once again surrounded by a red train. Stuart kept the peloton under control to the foot of Hekpoort. Where after two of the main engines in our team Kent main and Gustav Basson took over duties making it really tough on the climb. Clint looked really good on the climb which meant we had some cards to play.
I never really know how my power will be at altitude coming from Nelspruit. Hekpoort is'nt really long enough to ride yourself into the race. So you basically just hope your legs are there from the start. I made my move 2 kilometers from the summit. I managed to crest the climb with a 40sec lead but leaving something extra in the tank for the final 25km Time Trial.

I managed to keep the gap at about the 1 minute marker over the chasing bunch. The season has really been long so very surprised with the result. Something inside of me broke during my 2014 season plagued by diseases, stress, depression and some terrible crashes. Its been two years now and i'm happy to start seeing glimpses of the old Willie again. Once again a BIG THANKS to my Team and I hope to repay the favors somewhere in the future.
